SWTRA Framework covering an area from M4 Junction 32 to the Second Severn Crossing including M48, A48(M), A449, A4042, A466 and part sections of the A40 and A465.
Griffiths are currently Framework Contractors for the Eastern Region of the SWTRA Framework.
The work undertaken within the region includes the full duties associated with Highways and Structures maintenance, renewal and new build which fully mirror the requirements of the proposed new SWTRA Framework Contract.
During this contract period we have undertaken these works using primarily Option D forms of contract but have also included Options A, B and E on contracts ranging in value from £1k to £5m in value.
Our contract experience includes tendering, scheme development, planning, construction and maintenance in a fully collaborative environment, encompassing the partnering agreements within the contracts. Additionally, we work collaboratively with other Contractors to undertake works on one of the busiest networks in the UK.
Since the renewal contract in 2010 we have successfully completed over 300 projects, representing a value of over £54m.
In total, we have undertaken over 400 projects under both SWTRA Framework periods.
This project involved constructing a dedicated left turn lane between the westbound exit slip road and the southbound carriageway of the A4232. Also, the replacement of the concrete carriageway on the slip road near the junction to improve junction capacity and reduce congestion.
The dedicated lane was constructed across a greenfield site adjacent to the M4 Motorway and required the construction of a 10m high reinforced earth bank.
Griffiths worked with SWTRA through the framework to identify value engineering opportunities. This included designing the dedicated lane alignment to avoid the need to move a high voltage overhead electricity pylon, providing significant cost and time savings to be project.
The works included re-configuration and replacement of the M4 slip roads; widening the A449 carriageways and circulatory system to 4 lanes, new sign gantries, excavation and construction of a 2 lane road through the central island, linking the A449 (southbound) with the M4 (westbound) on-slip, excavation and construction of dedicated slip lanes between the M4 (westbound) off-slip the A48 Southern Distributor Road (SDR) and the M4 (eastbound off-slip and the A449, widening of the A449 (southbound) approach to the junction and widening the A48 Southern Distributor Road to 3 lanes.
The scheme won the Highways Magazine Award for Traffic Flow Improvement 2010and the Highly Commended Award for the CIHT Environmental Award 2010.
To construct the dedicated link widening of the M4 Junction 32 Westbound off slip. An extra lane was constructed and 160m was resurfaced with a thin surface course.
The new two lanesingle carriageway link between the Junction 32 circulatory carriageway and the A470 was then constructed with a new signalised junction on the A470.
The 32 weekconstruction period was completed 8 weeks early in order to have no impact on the NATO Summit held in Newport.
The project was considered highly successful by the Client and in 2012 won the Highways Magazine Excellence Award for Congestion Reduction.
