The Swansea Highways Partnership (SHP) is a partnership between the City & County of Swansea Council and a consortium of Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd. and Hanson Quarry Products Europe Ltd.
The original 4 year Partnership was formed in 2008 and was renewed in 2012 for a further two years, with the option of an additional two.
The Partnership is delivering greater efficiency and more effective planning of highway improvements throughout the county through closer integration and team working.
Griffiths undertake the civil engineering works, HANSON carry out surfacing works whilst the Council’s DLO complete planned maintenance and minor improvements works.
The partnership arrangement combines resources and expertise to implement the City and County of Swansea’s Local Transport Plans and work programmes by providing an enhanced service provision for Routine Maintenance, Highway Structural Maintenance and Improvements Works.
SHP is an integration of the teams to form and act as a single entity, which in turn produces a less adversarial working arrangement and provides focus and enthusiasm for joint workforce development.
Since 2008 Griffiths has undertaken approximately 120 projects as part of SHP. The range of projects undertaken varies in size and value from minor carriageway repairs, around £1k in value to new carriageway construction, worth in excess of £1.8m.
As part of the Partnership, Griffiths has also set up a recycling company, United Recycled Aggregates (URA) with the aim of providing both cost savings and reduced environmental impact. URA has the ability to recycle asphalt planings which can then be used for carriageway binder courses, surface courses in footways/cycleways and for pot-hole repairs and patching works.
